Nearly one third of Pakistan’s population is under 30 years of age.The most vulnerable group in terms of lack of basic in health and health education especially sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services, as per population council,2019.Main barriers I belief are access to right of information, exclusion of health care services of reproductive health services to adolescent and young girls (AGYM)in Lower middle income countries in general and Pakistan in specific.

Identifying this gap was as Public Health Consultant in collaboration of University of Manitoba,Canada and Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi. The broader scope of this project was to encourage the development of “healthy institutional environment and culture”through developing awareness among young girls regarding personal health care, determinants of health and well being, primary health care, nutrition and sexual reproductive health.

After many brainstorming sessions and literature review study was designed” Intervention Study to promote Health and Improve Healthcare Knowledge and Practices among Young Women”.I contributed in developing the general health, eye health and some inputs in SRH component. This Two year project targeted Sustainable Gold (SDG)3-Health.It focussed on ‘Ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all at all ages”

Our objectives were to improve general physical health through early detection of basic health problems and develop referral mechanism for early treatment,To improve health awareness through providing health education on key health topics,To promote healthy behaviours and practices among students by conducting various health related activities and shared learnings and using empowerment strategies and To generate research based evidence for health promotion and protection in educational settings.

An interesting methodology was developed and strategic approach and procedure was adopted.A pilot project of two years spread over four phases.First year students of 13 departments were enrolled.Program Science approach was adopted for Health promotion,Health practitioners, Disease prevention and empowerment initiatives.First phase is preparation phase, second is knowledge gathering, third phase is Intervention phase and fourth phase was of Assessment. An intervention was developed as a Health education curriculum development.Faculty and students champions were selected.Baseline and enplane student awareness assessment was done.Health education sessions were held with health camps and awareness campaigns were held.I am thankful of Al-Shifa Eye Trust Outreach School Screening team for doing pre and post interventions Eye health camps.I was joined by dedicated team of Optomitrists, doctors and staff.

Dissemination of results was done in an International Symposium on Public Health Intervention to promote Health Care Knowledge and Practices on 20th September 2023.Although it was short duration but shows overall improvement in knowledge for all areas of health topics.Behaviour change s difficult to achieve this project showed huge opportunity for practice change for health issues like SRH as there are few oppertunities for discussion.Way forward will be continuation of health promotion activities and developing collaborations with external technical support to other universities to assist in such activities.I am motivated for this good project to be sustainable and being replicated in other institutions as well.
